I wrote in this blog over two years ago this bit of important guidance concerning the statement included sometimes in the fine print section of each of our monthly electricity bills:
"The average cost per kWh should be at or near the lowest cost in the market for the plan chosen per your review of Power to Choose. If it isn't, you're paying too much."
Beware of websites that pretend to be the official Power to Choose.org site. Those activities are generally brokers earning commissions from the REPS for their misleading deeds.
Many REPS continue to employ gimmicks to deceive and misrepresent by using Time of Use discounts, added Base Charges, Higher Rates for Low Usage, and many awards of value to entice and fool many underinformed and complacent customers. I find in the cases of those customers, rates paid are much higher than what they might have chosen after some study and consideration. Folks, the EFL's outline the real truths. Why not save on electricity the same as for gasoline and groceries?
The best, low-cost rate plans are simple, non-tiered, straight rates across the board for all usage levels and those that impose no base charges. Wouldn't it be Hunky Dory if the PUC would prescribe such a rate form for all. I know a State Senator that introduced such a bill in the past.
Those residents and small business owners that do not shop for and contract for the lowest prices available at the time of their contract expirations are harming others statewide and contributing to the market not being as competitive as it would otherwise be. Those that led the efforts to deregulate Texas electricity over two decades ago visualized this behavior. Conscientious efforts of the part of all could change the situation.
Get smart, people. Just another example of 'Straight Talk'. Refer to the title of the blog.
